Use of a modified needle cap as cannula in transbuccal approach to the mandible

AIM: The transbuccal approach for plating the mandibular angle is a well-recognized technique. It overcomes the disadvantages of intraoral technique, i.e. the inability to place the screws perpendicular to the bone and the inaccessibility to the inferior border of the mandible. The objective of this technical note is to illustrate the usefulness of a simple disposable needle cap as a transbuccal cannula.
METHOD: The closed end of a disposable needle cap is cut in a tapered fashion with the help of a surgical blade so that it simulates the tip of a conventional cannula. Then it is inserted through the skin and dissected tissues in the usual manner.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: We have tried to use a modified needle cap in place of a transbuccal cannula and it works well in the absence of a conventional trocar and cannula.
