BACKGROUND: Increased participation of children and adolescents in sports competitions is growing and the physical demands of these athletes increases grows proportionally. The new researches in sports science are looking for instruments to improve the prescription of exercise and performance of athletes through physical evaluation strategies and orientation training.
METHODS: This study presents a cross-validated equation to predict bone age in people of both sexes. The sample consisted of 25 individuals of both sexes, aged 8-14 years (14 females and 11 males). Two protocols were applied to measure bone age: X-ray of the wrist and hand, considered the gold standard in the literature and the predictive equation of bone age from anthropometric variables such as height, body mass, arm circumference corrected, skinfold triceps, diameter of the humerus and femur diameter.
RESULTS: In the study the predictive equation shows a strong correlation between bone age and X-ray hand and wrist. Furthermore, there are significant values between bone age protocols X-rays and predictive equation in both sexes, confirming the effectiveness of the prediction equation, and a viable method for use in large populations, noninvasive and economical.
CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that equation is represented here as a strong potential to be used as an alternative to gold-standard measure, the X-ray hand and wrist.
