A three-dimensional kinematic analysis of men’s 20-km walking races using an inverted pendulum model

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate kinematic performance factors in men’s 20-km walking races.
METHODS: Sixteen race-walkers at three official men’s 20-km walking races were analysed using three-dimensional direct linear transformation (DLT). They included participants at the Olympics and World Championships. The subjects finished the race without disqualification and had not been disqualified in the 2 years before or after the races that were analysed in this present study.
RESULTS: There was a strong correlation between race speed and walking speed during the second half of the races. The extensional velocity of the centre of gravity to the centre of pressure on the support foot in the second half of the support phase significantly correlated with the walking speed in the second half of the race. This extensional velocity was obtained with the acceleration of the centre of gravity toward the centre of pressure in the middle of the support phase, which correlated with the vertical acceleration of the centre of gravity.
CONCLUSIONS: The vertical acceleration of the centre of gravity may be generated by the angular acceleration of the pelvis in the frontal plane, which prevented the downward motion of the centre of mass of the pelvis in the middle of the support phase.
