AIM: Aim of the study was to evaluate the capacity of one session of aerobic exercise to promote reduction of blood-pressure and improvement of sympathetic-vagal balance (BSV).
METHODS: Quasi-experimental study, crossover, with eight pregnant with 12 to 20 weeks of gestation previously sedentary. They randomly either remained at rest (control) or practiced one session of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise in cicloergometer with light to moderate intensity. Blood-pressure (auscultation technique) and BSV were registered before the exercise and within 10 minutes during 60 minutes of post-exercise recovery period. During a control session, the pregnant women remained seated during a corresponding period of the exercise and blood pressure and BSV were analyzed. ANOVA two-way or its equivalent nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis were used to P<0.05.
RESULTS: The women practiced the exercise referring 11±2 to 13±2 in the perceived subjetive effort scale with significant increase in the heart rate comparing to control session (P<0.05). In the post-exercise resting period it was observed decrease in the systolic and diastolic blood pressures at 50 and 60 minutes, respectively, comparing to basal values (P<0.05). There was only a tendency of decrease of BSV during the exercise. The control session did not result in changes in the variables analyzed.
CONCLUSION: 30 minutes of exercise is enough to promote post-exercise hypotension in pregnant women with 12 to 20 weeks of gestation without significant influence in the sympathetic-vagal balance.
