The ­author, as ­part of ­the gen­er­al prob­lem of driv­ing a ­car ­after trau­mat­ic ­brain inju­ry, ­set ­out ­the fol­low­ing ­four crit­i­cal ­aims: ­define ­the neu­ro­psy­cho­log­i­cal abil­ities ­and ­the behav­i­ou­ral char­ac­ter­is­tics ­required ­for ­safe ­car driv­ing; ­define ­the neu­ro­psy­cho­log­i­cal ­and behav­i­ou­ral dis­abil­ities inter­fer­ing ­with ­car driv­ing fit­ness; iden­ti­fy ­what ­could be ­the char­ac­ter­is­tics of a reli­able assess­ment of neu­ro­psy­cho­log­i­cal ­and behav­i­ou­ral stat­us ­required ­for ­safe ­car driv­ing; iden­ti­fy ­the avail­able reme­di­al tech­niques ­and ­the cor­re­lat­ed reha­bil­i­ta­tion ­steps ­which ­could ­assure ­the ­goal of ­safe ­car driv­ing ­after a trau­mat­ic ­brain inju­ry. As ­the lit­er­a­ture on ­that ­field is ­very ­recent ­and ­not exhaus­tive, an ­attempt is ­made to ­draw pre­lim­i­nary guide­lines ­for ­the ­above men­tioned ­aspects. The ­author express­es ­her ­hope ­that in ­the ­very ­near ­future European ­task ­force ­would be ­charged ­with modal­ity iden­tifi­ca­tion ­and def­i­ni­tion ­for ­the ­return to driv­ing ­after cere­bral ­lesion, par­tic­u­lar­ly ­after ­TBI, pro­vid­ing offi­cial ­and ­shared guide­lines appli­cable in ­all ­the European Union’s coun­tries. In ­that ­line ­the ­first ­steps ­are: to ­define ­the neu­ro­psy­cho­log­i­cal ­and behav­i­ou­ral char­ac­ter­is­tics con­sid­ered irre­nounce­able to guar­an­tee ­safe ­car driv­ing; to ­define ­who ­and ­how ­have to ­assess ­the sub­ject.
