S-EMG of the Hip: ROM pro­to­col. A ­study of con­sis­ten­cy and repe­atabil­ity/reli­abil­ity of electri­cal activ­ity of 18 mus­cles

BACKGROUND: This ­study test­ed the hypoth­e­sis ­that the S-EMG of the hip ROM is a meth­o­dol­o­gy ­which ­allows for ­good inter­nal con­sis­ten­cy of ­results as ­well as ­good repeat­abil­ity and reli­abil­ity of test­ing.
METHODS: The inves­ti­ga­tion was a method­o­log­i­cal ­study of an S-EMG pro­to­col of the hip ROM. The dura­tion of ­each ­test was ­approx ­half an ­hour. Each ­test was repeat­ed 3 ­times with­in an 8 ­hour day. Setting: the ­study was con­duct­ed in a pri­vate ­physician’s ­office. Participants: the ­study was con­duct­ed ­with 5 ­adult vol­un­teers par­tic­i­pants. None had ­acute myo­fas­cial or oth­er mus­cu­lar dys­func­tions, how­ev­er 4/5 had clin­i­cal his­to­ries of mus­cu­lar dys­func­tion. Interventions: the test­ing was not inva­sive. It did not ­involve any unusu­al move­ments ­such as may ­have ­fatigued the bod­ies of the par­tic­i­pants. Measures: the sta­tis­ti­cal out­comes ­were the fol­low­ing: gath­er­ing of aver­age (X), stan­dard devi­a­tion (SD) and co-effi­cients of vari­a­tion (CV) of 5 rep­e­ti­tions of activ­ity or rest­ing poten­tials gath­ered for ­each seg­ment of hip ROM test­ed. These sta­tis­tics ­were aver­aged ­over 18 mus­cles and 14 seg­ments of ROM for the 3 ­trials of ­each ­test. The over­all sta­tis­tics ­were nor­mal­ized in ­terms of activ­ity/ ­rest ­ratio (A/R) and in ­terms of per­cent­age of dis­per­sion ­from aver­age val­ues ­over the 3 ­trials of the test­ing.
RESULTS: The over­all ­results indi­cat­ed ­that the S-EMG of the hip ROM pro­to­col con­duct­ed ­over 3 ­trials and 3 per­sons ­showed a ­very ­high ­degree of inter­nal con­sis­ten­cy (CV>93%) and a ­high ­degree of repeat­abil­ity/reli­abil­ity of all the ­results ­over the 18 mus­cles and 3 ­trials (1% 1%).
CONCLUSIONS: In con­clu­sion, the S-EMG/ hip ROM pro­to­col test­ed ­shows ­that S-EMG meth­o­dol­o­gy has a ­very ­high ­degree of inter­nal con­sis­ten­cy and repeat­abil­ity/ reli­abil­ity in the con­di­tions inves­ti­gat­ed.
