Aim. Unilateral enlargement of the mandibular condyle can be caused both by benign and malignant tumors.
Methods. A retrospective study of our series of cases surgically treated between 1995 and 2009 was performed. Fourteen cases of tumors located in the mandibular condyle were found. Eleven cases were diagnosed as benign tumors: 2 osteomas and 9 osteochondromas. The three other cases corresponded to metastatic tumors to the mandibular condyle, primary arising in the breast, colon and kidney.
Results. All the cases considered as bifid condyles or condylar hyperplasia were not entered this study. Seven benign tumors affected the left condyle and 4 the right side. 8 patients were females and 3 males. Mean age of the group was 39.7 years (20 to 49 years). All the cases underwent surgical resection of the tumor. Reconstruction with a costochondral graft was done in 6 cases. Mean follow-up was 77.8 months (16-180 months).
Conclusions. No recurrence was noted in any case during the follow-up. In one case ankylosis developped and was surgically treated. Only biopsy of the condylar head was performed in the three malignant cases presented.
