Over the last few years digital medical photography has become a high-quality tool for healthcare professionals in planning and documentation of treatment. Especially the field of Cranio-maxillofacial surgery has great benefit of the advantages of digital photography, with improved diagnostics, better planning of surgery and treatment together with the patient. Here it has proved necessary to define a basic documentation set. The need for a supplement of special picture sets arises during clinical work. Defining photographic viewpoints for special topics like orthognatic surgery or implantology has become of interest and is presented in this paper. Besides the medical reason for documentation photographs have become an important instrument in forensic purposes. Photography and its application in court will be explained. A recent innovation in maxillofacial surgery is the field of 3d photography as a diagnostic tool and for treatment planning. This publication highlights the possibilities for practical integration of 3d photography in orthognathic surgery, in treatment of craniofacial deformities and in scientific work.
