BACKGROUNDS: The aim was to evaluate, using a Duplex, the results of compression sclerotherapy of the sapheno-femoral junction, compared to its diameter and to the possibility of applying an efficient bandage.
METHODS: 500 SFJ’s have had compression sclerotherapy according to the Sigg-technique. They have been divided into three groups depending on the circumference at root of the thigh. Everyone of the three groups has been again divided into two equal subgroups, according to the diameter of the SFJ of more or less than 8 mm (I, II).
RESULTS: From a purely clinical point of view the results have been satisfactory in all patients. Following our Duplex criteria we had 76 failures (22%). There has been no difference in the failure rate of the two subgroups (I and II). An important difference in the rate of failures has been found in the three groups.
CONCLUSIONS: This confirms that a successful sclerotherapy of the SFJ can be performed independently from its diameter, but under the condition that it can be effectively compressed.
