Scleroterapia delle varici degli arti inferiori mediante schiuma sclerosante di Fibro-vein® con il metodo Tessari. Esperienza preliminare

Frullini A. 1, Cavezzi A. 2, Tessari L. 3

BACKGROUND: Aim of the paper is to evaluate the short term efficacy and safety of the sclerosing foam (SS) obtained from sodiumtetradecyl sulphate (Fibro-vein®) according to Tessari’s method in the treatment of teleangectasias and lower limbs varicose veins.
METHODS: From January 10 to February 20, 2000, 77 treatments with sclerosing foam obtained according to Tessari’s method (SST) on varicose veins have been performed: 24 were treatments on saphenous districts or on junctional recurrences, 37 for collateral varicose veins and 16 for reticular veins or teleangectasias. The foam was obtained utilizing Fibro-vein® (FV) in concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 3%.
RESULTS: A very high percentage of immediate success was obtained in the group treated with the prompt occurrence of massive spasm in the majority of cases and obliteration in all 61 medium or large size venous districts at 1 month follow-up. Four minor complications were observed (two transient visual disturbances and two limited varico-phlebitis); in the treatment of teleangectasias some difficulties occurred in choosing the proper concentration, probably due to the enhanced power of the foam (two minor cutaneous necrosis).
CONCLUSIONS: SST based on Fibro-vein has demonstrated to be, in this pilot study, an effective and safe treatment for large and medium sized varicose veins. Its role in teleangectasias is still to be defined.
