Background. An increase in the number of vascular traumas of the extremities has been observed over the past decades causing many problems for a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach and surgical technique.
Methods. The authors report a series of 22 vascular traumas treated over a 42-month period. No fatality was reported. Sixteen patients (72.7%) underwent simple eco colour-Doppler directly in the operating theatre, whereas angiography was only used in 6 cases of lower limb lesions associated with multiple trauma (27.2%). Limb salvage was achieved in 21 cases (95.4%); demolitive surgery was only required in 1 case (4.5%). Severe neurological sequelae were observed in 2 cases (9%) and motor deficit caused by tendon lesions in 1 case (4.5%).
Results. The good results obtained are the result of the short ischemic interval between the acute event and treatment (mean time lapse 3 hours and 40 min).
Conclusions. The authors discuss the need for a multidisciplinary approach that is as rapid as possible to guarantee the best long-term results.
