Contemporary sialendoscopy and lithotripsy
Fritsch M. H.
St. Vincent Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN, USA
Salivary endoscopy and lithotripsy has seen rapid development of nonsurgical and minimally invasive techniques for diagnosis and treatment during the last 20 years. Conventional treatment has shifted from open gland resection procedures to endoscopic gland preservation techniques. Treatment is now directed towards preserving anatomy and physiology for the patient for their lifetime. Microendoscope and instruments as well as intra- and extracorporeal lithotripters are now well accepted techniques for intraductal and glandular work upon the salivary glands. Algorithms have been and are being developed and updated to better clarify diagnosis and treatment options. A broad range of sophisticated techniques has been developed and is used daily worldwide.
