Computer aided maxillofacial surgery

Recent advancements in craniomaxillofacial surgery include the use of digital technology such as computer-aided design and computer aided modeling software programs, which assist with three-dimensional analysis and surgical planning for complex deformities. New imaging techniques such as surface imaging and three-dimensional computed tomography, stereolithographic modeling, and intraoperative navigation have the potential to provide the surgeon with a precisely planned procedure and then subsequently allow the accurate transfer of the virtual reconstruction into reality. Experience has shown that these technological advances are particularly useful in maxillomandibular reconstruction, cranial reconstruction, orbital surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, orthognathic surgery, head and neck ablative surgery and dental implantology. The early experience is promising; however, further study is needed to evaluate outcomes and provide a cost analysis.
