Aim. The aim of this study is the clinical evaluation of telithromycin efficacy in cases of acute otitis media in adult subjects, since this drug is not yet available for pediatric use in Italy.
Methods. Fifty-two adult patients with acute otitis media were evaluated using video otoscopy and impedance audiometry to evaluate the results of 5-days therapy with telithromycin 800 mg once a day.
Results. The results show the high clinical success of telithromycin (94.23%). Moreover, the video otoscopy score, the impedance audiometric data and the pressure values of tympanometric peak improved as well as the tympanic compliance and the Brook gradient.
Conclusion. A review of the current antibiotic therapy is made and considering the increasing levels of bacterial resistance to frequently prescribed antibiotics for the common pathogens causing otitis media, telithromycin may be an effective therapy to overcome these resistant strains.
