Background. Although the formation of cerumen plugs in the external auditory canal doesn’t represent a really dangerous or severe pathology, it is one of the commonest causes of otorhinolaryngological advice; for this reason, it is useful to study new devices facilitating the removal of cerumen plugs.
Methods. To evaluate, in humans, the cerumelitic activity of a microbiologically controlled sea water solution (Audispray), 51 patients with bilateral cerumen plugs underwent repeated auricular nebulizations of Audispray in the right ear. Cerumen plugs were subsequently bilaterally removed by auricular irrigation with water at body temperature.
Results. On the basis of the results obtained, we can confirm that Audispray positively affects the easiness and pleasantness of cerumen plugs removals.
Conclusions. Moreover, our study demonstrated that Audispray allows an efficacious modification of physico-chemical characteristics of cerumen plugs, facilitating their removal.
