Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is increasing in prevalence and is associated with significant patient morbidity. The evaluation of patients with suspected MPE, and their management can be challenging. This review provides a general overview of the diagnostic strategies available and discusses in detail the palliative therapeutic approaches which should be considered for individual patients.
