Renal function after lung transplantation

The improvement of long-term survival is one of the consequences of the greater success and availability of lung transplantation. However, the increased number of survivors has meant an increased number of complications. Among these complications the most threatening are acute renal injury and chronic kidney disease, which are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Several studies have addressed this problem in the attempt to identify patients at risk for impairment of renal function. The identification of risk factors and mechanisms leading to renal damage could help preventing renal complications and treating them before end stage renal failure develops. This review will focus on the major causes and mechanisms of renal damage in lung transplantion recipients.
