The effects of water exercise on metabolic and biochemical levels among geriatric population

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of exactly 20 weeks of exercise in water, three times a week with 45 minutes each session, in elderly aged between 60 and 81 years old. We intended to analyze the influence of the practice of physical activity, in metabolic parameters and anthropometric variables.
METHODS: Our sample consists of 38 females with an average age of 64.5 in the control group (CG) and an average age of 65.3 in the experimental group (EG). The entire sample was divided into two groups as follows: CG with 19 elements and the EG with 19 elements, during 20 weeks.
RESULTS: By the analysis of the results, the CG, who practiced organized and structured physical activity, showed significant differences in systolic blood pressure, Body Mass Index and fat mass. The EG, the subject of our study, showed significant differences in the variables systolic and diastolic blood pressure, the Body Mass Index and fat mass.
CONCLUSIONS: The exercise program implemented for these elderly groups achieved positive results, with significant differences in anthropometric variables, such as Body Mass Index and fat mass, and on metabolic variables: systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
