Current status of metal-on-metal bearing surface couplings in total hip arthroplasty

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is one of the most clinically efficacious reconstructive operations in orthopedic surgery. Its volume is projected to continue to increase. Many controversies exist with respect to which bearing couplings is the most durable and safe for the patients. This particular subject has become even more important and complex with the recent recall of a particular implant system. The purpose of this review is to focus on the latest evidence-based data on the metal-on-metal bearing surfaces in THA over the past 15 months. Data were extracted from reports published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The Journal of Arthroplasty, and Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research. The time period for data inclusion was from April 2010 to August 2011. We included data presented on THAs at the major conferences, including the 2010 Hip Society Fall Meeting, the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), the 2011 Hip Society Open Meeting, and the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
