Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty has opened a new era in the treatment of complex and challenging shoulder maladies. Where few options previously existed, the reverse shoulder prosthesis may offer impressive improvements in clinical function. Understanding the developmental history and contemporary clinical outcomes of the reverse total shoulder prosthesis will allow refinement of its indications and give insights where future applications of its use may lie.
