Surgical protocol in orbital fracture based on linear CT measurements

BACKGROUND: The objective of the present study is to evaluate and classify with a linear measurement obtained from orbital TC the anatomical defects in fractured orbits, with the aim of developing guidelines for primary reconstruction and reduce complication likes, orbital dystopia, diplopia, uncorrected reconstruction material, palpebral entropion, ectropion and lagophthalmos.
METHODS: Of the 55 patients with orbital trauma treated from January 2015 to November 2015 in our Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, 31 were male, 24 were female, and the mean age was 45 years.
RESULTS: According to the protocol, 55 primary surgeries were performed without postoperative complications and with good clinical results and orbital symmetry.
CONCLUSIONS: A good management of orbital trauma is made possible by a simple standardized protocol based on linear measurements in CT without the aid of computer software or three-dimensional reconstruction. This protocol guides the surgeon in the choice of reconstruction materials and surgical approach.
