Clinical, diagnostic and morphological aspects in ocular toxocariasis: a case report

oxocariasis is the clinical term applied to infection in the human host with either Toxocara canis or Toxocara cati. Both of these are ascarid nematodes and their definitive hosts are the domestic dog and cat, in which they live as adults within the lumen of the small intestine. Human infection is due to accidental ingestion of embryonated eggs from contaminated sources as soil or contaminated food. This roundworm parasite can infect the eye, causing visual impairment or vision loss. Ocular manifestations varies from severe endophthalmitis to silent incidental findings on a routine examination. We report a case of ocular toxocariasis in a 31-year-old Asiatic male patient, who presented to our observation complaining of visual impairment. Initially, fundoscopic examination revealed a granuloma located temporally and subsequent formation of vitreous strands with retinal traction in macular region and optic disk. Presentation, clinical findings, morphological analysis and treatment are discussed. The Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) serology for Toxocara canis was performed, demonstrating the positivity for IgG. The morphological analysis was conducted with Fluorescein angiography (FA; HRA 2, Heidelberg Engineering), and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT; Spectralis, Heidelberg Tomography) and results have been reported. Treatment with the anthelmintic, albendazole, was initiated. Then the patient was recommended to surgery, consisting in vitrectomy with removal of the internal limiting membrane.
