In chronic glaucoma more than in other diseases it is extremely important to obtain a quick and sure diagnosis. This is still difficult today. Year after year diagnostic tools improve and we have new glaucoma diagnosis technology: think of the continuing evolution of perimetric methods and provocative tests. It is a paradox that all this technology and semeiotic tools can increase the difficulty in obtaining an early diagnosis. We still have to understand the exact etiopathogenesis of glaucoma. The aim of our article is to analyze the history of advancements in glaucoma and in the scientific research about it.
