Oral contraceptives and quadrantanopia in young women

Morreale Bubella R., Morreale Bubella D.

PDF

Three cases of homonymous quadrantanopia in young women using oral contraception and presenting other risk factors of atherosclerosis (cigarette smoking, hypercholesterolemia and hypertension) are described. It is suggested that all patients, with clinical signs of damage of the vertebro-basilar vascular system, should be submitted to an ophthalmological examination for a possible limited damage of the visual field. It is also suggested that visual field examination should be considered as usual test for women using oral contraception since ischemic lesions of the occipital artery may occur without clear signs.
