The SoftPerm contact lens. A unique alternative to rigid gas permeable lenses

Chung C. W.

PDF

The SoftPerm contact lens combines a rigid gas permeable (RGP) central zone with a soft hydrophilic peripheral skirt. Because of its unique design, the SoftPerm lens may have better centration, stability, and comfort than RGP lenses in eyes with irregular astigmatism and/or steep corneas. Often the SoftPerm lens provides better vision than with spectacle correction, and sometimes it appears to provide better vision than with RGP lenses. However, the SoftPerm lens has certain problems, including a tendency to tear at the junction of the RGP and hydrophilic phases. A significant number of patients who have failed RGP lenses also discontinue SoftPerm lens wear, mainly because of discomfort. Nonetheless, the SoftPerm lens can be a successful alternative to RGP lenses for many patients.
