The scope of geriatric services has expanded with the increasing proportion of the elderly and in parallel with a change in the perception by the community of the health care needs of this segment of the population. This chapter traces the history of geriatric from the turn of the 21st century to the present, during which a transition from institutionalized care to a major focus on community-based care and rehabilitation has taken place. Following a discussion on the problems of geriatric services, an overview is given of the various different approaches to evaluation, misplacement of the elderly, analysis of met and unmet needs, changes in services, outcome measurements, and delivery of care.
