The most common sterilization techniques in women and men are described and the efficacy, the long term effects and the complications of the different techniques are pointed out. The elements concerning a correct and complete patient's information for male and female surgical sterilization are analyzed and a consensus schedule, different for men and women, is suggested. However, the necessity of a preliminary meeting between the doctor and the patient is stressed.
