Aim. Biomerica's Easy-Check® is a quality test for screening drugs in urine without instrumentation and is distributed in Italy by Silmarc Pharma. Its reliability has been assessed and compared with Abbott's FPIA technique.
Methods. The assessment was carried out on 200 urine specimens by analysing 5 metabolites (opiates, amphetamines, cocaine, cannabinoids and methadone). The comparison was carried out with the FPIA technique and discordant results were confirmed with the GC-MS technique.
Results. The test in question grave excellent results with 100% agreement in all negative cases. As regards the positives, here again the agreement was 100% in the screening for amphetamines, methadone and cannabinoids whereas for opiates agreement fell to 93% and for cocaine to 97%. Discordant samples were analysed with GC-MS, confirming for opiates what had been obtained with FPIA, while for cocaine confirmation proved the Easy-Check® right.
Conclusion. We can therefore state that this test can be utilised as preliminary screening because it is endowed with high sensitivity and adequate specificity, although it is always necessary to confirm in GC-MS to validate a positive result.
