The authors review the history of liver transplantation and examine the clinical indications and selection criteria, contraindications, surgical techniques, transplant complications, immunosuppressive treatment and its collateral effects, results and prognosis. They then take into consideration the criteria that may be useful for evaluation purposes following a review of the literature on this subjects.
