Characteristics and distribution of Chi Shao in China

AIM: The germplasm resource of Chi Shao was investigated completely in the past 2 years to study the differences among different germplasms of Chi Shao.
METHODS: The presence of Chi Shao was investigated in all locations in China. The objects of investigation include the location of Chi Shao, climate, integrated temperature (above 10 °C), physiognomy, distribution of Chi Shao and the character of plants.
RESULTS: The investigation put in evidence that some morphology characteristics of species from which Chi Shao (Radix paeoniae rubra) derive are different from what described in the flora of China. The distribution of Chi Shao is obviously zonal in China and the distribution tends towards southwest-northeast. According to the quality and distribution of Chi Shao in all locations, the producing area of Chi Shao is regionalized into 4 sections.
CONCLUSION: There are obvious differences among different germplasms of Chi Shao. The distribution of Chi Shao is obviously zonal in China.
