Aim: Eupatorium adenophorum Spreng (also called crofton weed) is a perennial plant of daisy family, producing volatile phytochemical poisonous to human and livestock upon contact. In recent years, studies have shown that crofton weed extracts are active on aphid, mite and many pathogens. In order to determine the acute toxicity of butanol Soxhlet extract from crofton weed (above ground parts), we used the modified Karber’s method to determine the LD50 and acute toxicity effect by intragastric administration in Kunming breed mice.
Methods: Mortality, body and organ weight were recorded and pathological changes were examined. The LD50 of extract is 18369.6 mg/kg. Body weight of mice is inversely proportional to the dosage of administration. Mice that treated the highest dosage showed the least body weight gain (P<0.01).
Results: There were very significant differences in intestine index, liver index, and testis index in mice that received the second highest dose compared with control, but no significant differences in the least dosage treatment. The dead animals receiving the highest dosage showed marked pathological changes, while animals receiving the least dosage did not.
Conclusion: These results indicate that the butanol Soxhlet extract of crofton weed is a slight toxic substance, which has different levels acute toxic effects to various tissue. The toxicity has a certain level of dose-effect relationship. This study provides a reference for plant source pesticide development from crofton weed.
