This article is the report of a symposium, endorsed by the Section of Sports Cardiology of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, the Italian Society of Sports Cardiology, and the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine, which was held within the 12th International Workshop on Cardiac Arrhythmias (VeniceArrhythmias 2011, Venice, Italy, October 2011). The following main topics were discussed during the symposium: update on prevention of sudden cardiac death in the athletes, automatic external defibrillators in the athletic field, controversies on sudden cardiac death risk evaluation in the athletes and on physical exercise in patients with arrhythmias.
