Field tests in wheelchair Mini-basketball

Aim. The aim of this paper was to select field tests to assess specific wheelchair mini-basketball skills (SWMBS), to determine their repeatability and to evaluate changes in SWMBS after six months of training using the same tests.
Methods. Fourteen wheelchair mini-basketball athletes (age 13.8±4.8 years, height 145.9±13.8 cm, body weight 48.1±18.3 kg) were administered five field tests to assess SWMBS: lay-up (LU), figure-eight (F8), figure-eight+ball (F8+B), 20-meter sprint (20mS) and zone shot (ZS). In the first evaluation session (1stES), tests were administered at the beginning of the competitive season in three consecutive training sessions (1TS, 2TS, 3TS). A second evaluation session (2ndES) was carried out six months later (4TS, 5TS, 6TS).
Results. The 1stES data showed: 1) significant correlations between tests; and 2) significant correlations (P<0.01) between functional classification and all SWMBS tests. The 2ndES data showed: 1) significant differences between 4TS and 6TS for all SWMBS field tests, and between 4TS and 5TS for F8 test; 2) significant correlations (P<0.01) between functional classification and SWMBS tests. When 2TS-3TS and 5TS–6TS were aggregated, general improvement was found on all tests, but significant improvement only on the 20 mS (P=0.013) and the ZS (P=0.028).
Conclusion. The tests were repeatable and reliable in assessing SWMBS. They were also able to monitor training effects and were significantly correlated with functional classification.
