Development of Wristwatch-type stress-calorie monitor and its wireless communication management system

BACKGROUND: We have developed a wristwatch-type stress-calorie monitor (WSC) to evaluate calorie expenditure during mental and physical activity and deep-sleep time.
METHODS: The WSC incorporates both a Seiko photoelectric pulse sensor to measure heart rate (HR) and an acceleration pick-up sensor to measure body activity (ACT). Calorie expenditure was calculated from the combination of HR and ACT. Those data measured by WSC can be communicated with the tablet PC or smartphone using wireless communication (ISM band, 2.4 GHz). This study evaluated the accuracy and application of this monitor to everyday lifestyle. Healthy university students (n=22; age, 21.4±1.8 years) underwent measurement of HR and ACT by WSC and ABPM-ECG device for 24 hours during free activity. Mental and physical activity, such as mental arithmetic, speech, face recognition, walking, and jogging, were measured experimentally on a different day with the WSC monitor and Power Lab calorie monitor. The WSC could evaluate deep-sleep time (based on lack of acceleration and basal HR), which was almost in agreement with each subject’s activity list recording.
RESULTS: Basal, sleep-time, and 24-h HRs showed significant correlation between the WSC and ABPM-ECG during free activity. Calorie expenditure measured by WSC correlated with Power Lab measurements for each mental and physical activity (p<0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: The wearable WSC can easily measure calorie expenditure during mental and physical activity.
