BACKGROUND: It has been extensively known that the Trp64Arg (rs#4994) polymorphism in the β3-adrenergic receptor (β3-AR) gene may be one of the probable genetic markers for the pathogenesis of obesity and insulin resistance. In this study, we investigated the association between this genetic polymorphism in the β3-AR gene and changes in obesity-associated phenotypes following combined exercise on physical fitness and health-related parameters in response to combined exercise program.
METHODS: A total of 40 middle-aged women with %body fat over 30% were recruited in this study, and the combined exercise program was performed for 12 weeks, 3 days a week, 60 minutes per day. The Trp64Arg polymorphism in the β3-AR gene was genotyped by SNaPshot method.
RESULTS: Among the parameters studied, this genetic polymorphism was significantly associated with the changes in weight (kg) and Body Mass Index (BMI) values after the intervention (P<0.05). Especially, the subjects with Trp64Arg genotype indicated the statistically significant reduction in two obesity-related parameters (weight and BMI values) after the intervention than those with Trp/Trp genotype.
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, our data suggest that the Trp64Arg polymorphism in the β3-AR gene may significantly influence the changes in combined exercise-mediated obesity-associated phenotypes in middle-aged obese women. Further studies using larger sample size will be required to clarify this relation.
