AIM: This study tested whether the the genetic polymorphisms in three candidate genes (endothelin-1 [EDN1], renin [REN] and estrogen receptor-α [ESR1] genes) were significantly associated with changes in body composition and arterial stiffness after a 16 weeks combined exercise program in middle aged Korean women.
METHODS: A total of thirty women participated in this study. Body composition (height, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI)) and brachial ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) as a measure of arterial stiffness were measured from each participant. The three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in each candidate gene were also genotyped using the SNaPshot method.
RESULTS: After performing a combined exercise program, baPWV values were significantly decreased in our subjects (p <0.05), and rs#2234693 polymorphism in ESR1 gene was significantly associated with the change in baPWV value after the exercise program (p <0.05).
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the rs#2234693 polymorphism in the ESR1 gene may be one of the useful genetic markers associated with the reduction of arterial stiffness after physical exercise. Further work will be required to search for other useful genetic markers associated with the changes in arterial stiffness after the exercise.
