Aim: Recently in Japan we have been using Gorei-san, as one of the recipes of oriental medicine, for the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). We would like to show some effectiveness of Gorei-san and other drug interaction for the medical treatment of CSDH.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the medical treatment with Gorei-san, who were come in our center between 2010 and 2011.
Results: There were 29 patients (46-94 years old and 62% male) using Gorei-san for the medical treatment of CSDH. Of those, eight patients treated by Gorei-san only, while others treated by Gorei-san and other drugs. In 24 patients CSDH were cured (21 patients) or decreased (three censored cases), on the contrary in four patients they had to take a burr hole opening operation and in one patient the thickness of CSDH increased and censored. In the latter five patients’ group, Gorei-san and ibudilast simultaneously administered, and logistic regression analysis showed the negative interaction between them.
Conclusion: We suggested that medical treatment by Gorei-san with CSDH had some effectiveness but we should pay attention to the drug interaction with Gorei-san and ibudilast.
