AIM: Adherence and pitfalls in following a gluten free diet (GFD) were studied among some celicac adult patients.
METHODS: A questionnaire was developed and e-mailed to some people affected by celiac disease (CD) where many questions were done about some anagraphic and clinic issues about symptoms of arousal of CD and troubles about following strictly a GFD.
RESULTS: 100% of patients took part into the survey; out of 141 CD patients, 29 were males (20.5%), 112 females (79.5%); their average age ± SD was 37.5±12.5 yrs. Symptoms of onset, useful to make a CD diagnosis were asked and discussed; patients were asked about which information the general practitioner (GP) gave them and what the dietician/nutritionist added to it. Some information about how strictly GFD was followed, symptoms reported in case of dietetic contamination with gluten and main troubles to follow GFD was asked.
CONCLUSION: Even if GFD is the only known therapy for CD, its strict adherence gives some troubles to people affected by CD. More effort is needed by patients and physicians to do better.
