Aim. Narcotrend (NCT) is a new type of EEG monitor designed to measure the depth of anesthersia and degree of sedation. The objective of this study was to assess the performance of NCT in predicting recovery of consciousness following neurological surgery.
Methods. Thirty patients who underwent neurological surgery and recovered in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) were enrolled. NCT was used to monitor the stage of patients’ consciousness recovery. The patients’ degree of sedation was scored clinically using a three-level sedation scale. The success of prediction of the NCT was assessed by using Pk value. A Pk value of 1 indicates that the indicator can accurately predict on every occasion. A Pk of 0.5 or lower indicates very low accuracy of the prediction.
Results. There was a good correlation between using the three-level sedation score and using NCT to predict neurological recovery in patients undergoing surgeries. (Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.647 [P<0.01]). NCT achieved a Pk value of 0.86. In contrast, using mean arterial pressure only obtained a Pk value of 0.69 and using the heart rate obtained a Pk value of 0.51.
Conclusion. NCT can more accurately predict the recovery of patients’ consciousness following neurosurgery.
