Aim. To assess the impact of with previous cesarean section and obstetric surgery on the incidence of placenta previa and accreta.
Methods. This is a retrospective study including patients with sonographically detected placenta previa and accreta, who underwent caesarean section since January 1996 to December 2004. The incidence of placenta previa and accreta in patients withor without a history of previous caesarean section or curettage was analyzed.
Results. In our series of 27 426 cases,170 (0,62%) showed the presence of placenta previa, and 10 (0,04%) the presence of placenta accreta. The incidence of placenta previa increased throughout over the years, was higher in patients with a previous cesarean section or curettage, and in relation to the number of surgical procedures when compared with those with an unscarred uterus (1,10% vs 0,31%; p<0.001 and 1,26% vs 0,44%; p<0.001, respectively).
Conclusion. Our data revealed an increased incidence of placenta previa throughout the years, probably due to the increased rate of caesarean section. The incidence of placenta previa increases significantly in relation to the number of previous caesaren section and curretage.
