This paper reports a study carried out during a volunteer period in the Department of Pediatric Heart Surgery of the “Monaldi” Hospital of Naples in 1986/1989. The observations reported in the paper resulted from following the physicians around as an apprentice on the various stages of their rounds or in the operating theatres, questioning the operators and collecting the impressions of the mothers of the children hospitalized (or of the children themselves) before and after the delicate heart operations.
The method of choice for approaching the child, mother and heart surgeon was the conversation in the course of which each was invited to express openly the inconveniences of their condition.
Following a short description of the problems related to the presence of the mothers in hospital, the theoretical details necessary for a more profound reading of the clinical examples are provided and the cases are then described.
