Nine general practitioners, 5 paediatricians and 4 family doctors submitted a questionnaire of 20 questions to patients in order to evaluate expectations and opinion of their work. A total of 1 439 questionnaires were distributed, 839 of them returned completed. Not everybody replied to all the questions in the questionnaire. It emerged that the average numer of visits of patients to our facilities was about 5-10 per annum; the highest frequency was observed in women. As many as 58.7% were satisfied with the opening times of the facility, although 73.5% would appreciate other times in the course of the day. Among the patients, 71% welcomed the possibility of having an appointment. Although we are all physicians who operate in single units, the presence of more than one physician in the same facility does not cause concern. Of all patients, 88.8% do not like a subservient physician and want one that looks after their health, confirmation of the level of confidence in us. As many as 94% are opposed to the abolition of the National Health Service and to indirect forms of payment. Updating of their physician with participation in congresses and courses is appreciated by 96.7% of patients. Among the patients interviewed 62.9% consider it useful for their doctor to participate in experiments but only, 47.7% are prepared to participate themselves.
