Background. The aim of this study was to determine the role of fibronectin in fetal hepatic erythropoietic proliferation, and differentiation throughout development.
Methods. The presence of the fibronectin, and glycophorin-C was investigated in a series of fetal hepatic specimens during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester of gestation.
Results. Fibronectin was strongly expressed in the stromal cells of the hepatic portal triads during the 2nd trimester over the first (p<0.0001, “t”-test) and 3rd trimesters (p<0.0001, “t”-test). Furthermore, an intense immunostaining for erythrocytes (Glycophorin C) was observed in the 2nd trimester over the first (p<0.0001, “t”-test) and 3rd trimesters (p<0.0001, “t”-test).
Conclusions. On the basis of these results it is suggested that fibronectin shows an erythroid growth-promoting activity during the 2nd trimester of gestation, probably mediated by the cell adhesion domain of the molecule.
