Background. Following on from our research on long-term, explanted, patent vascular grafts in Dacron® published in 1993-1994, we consider that the long-debacted problem of latent, unapparent infection, arising at a late stage and sustained by the presence of the graft material itself, deserves further investigation, and in the present study we focus specifically on the question of the direct action of bacteria on virgin grafts of the same age.
Methods. The Dacron® grafts examined were of the same generation as the explanted ones and the bacterial strains were those which were most prevalent in our hospitals at the time of implant. Research protocol was identical, from the point of view of both ultrastructure and physical tests. The results of this study are the conclusion of our investigation.
Results. We have not been able to demonstrate unequivocally that the bacterial strains examined attack Dacron® fibers, although the possibility cannot be excluded.
Conclusions. Our deductions regarding the biodegradation of the graft material are the result of twenty years’ work. They cover the following aspects of the question:
— the role of macrophages from a foreign body on anastomotic disjunction;
— the degradation of the artery at the suture line;
— the possible existence of a latent infection which we have not, however, been able to determine in vivo or demonstrate in vitro
