Background. Laparoscopy is one of the most common gynecologic operative procedures performed today. Indication may be diagnostic, therapeutic or both. Laparoscopy was compared with laparotomy in the treatment of benign dermoid cysts.
Methods. Twenty-five women, aged 14-53, with adnexal masses were submitted to surgical treatment from 1994-1998 after clinical diagnosis, u/s diagnosis-tumor markes and immediate adequate histological confirmation. In 25 women the adnexal masses were benign dermoids cysts. In this group laparoscopic procedures for 19 women and laparotomy procedures for 6 women are included.
Results. Complications rates were low in performing these particular procedures of laparoscopy.
Conclusions. Laparoscopy is the acceptable treatment for benign dermoid cysts.
