Changes of self-concept with a psychopedagogic intervention program in hospitalized children with cancer

Physical, and social aspects are involved in the appearance, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in childood. In recent years, advances in the treatment cancer in childood have led to changes in survival and improved quality of life for long-term survivors. On the other hand, hospitalization is a very frequent happening in the life of children with cancer. The psychopedagogic intervention program was used as a resource to improve children’s life in hospital and to prevent negative effects of hospitalization. One of the negative effects is the appearance of deficits in the self-concept in children. The program is described and applied in a sample of children with cancer. The statistic analysis showed the effectiveness of this program concerning the reduction and preventive effects in the appearance of deficits in self- concept in children; therefore its use is recommended.
