FULL TEXT

Wearing of a lumbar support is a possible conservative treatment for low back pain. A retrospective study was performed to assess the effects of a semirigid lumbosacral brace, made of the new resin 3M Soft Cast, in a group of outpatients with degenerative lumbar spine problems. A lumbosacral Soft Cast brace was prescribed by a single physiatrist to twentynine patients, with acute/subacute or chronic low back pain of degenerative origin, with or without sciatica. It was used in the daytime, for two weeks, and than, progressively released in the third week. Twenty-three persons sent back a questionnaire especially addressed to know: 1) level of pain before and just after the use of the brace, and one month after its release; 2) opinion about the comfort given by the jacket; 3) comparison with other supports, already tried. Pain decrease was good in people with acute/subacute problems and in those with chronic backache; poor results were found in people with chronic low back pain and sciatica. Level of satisfaction was very high; good was comfort given in ADL and work activities. Of 16 who had already tried a lumbar brace, 2 patients found “no difference'', 9 had “more benefit'' and 5 “much more benefit'' with Soft Cast jacket. 3M SoftCast enables to make, in a short time, a support that is custom made ready for use, durable. It proved to be effective in people with acute/subacute low back pain (with or without leg pain) and in those with chronic low back ache, without sciatica.
