The interactions between skin and nervous system

Misery L.

Department of Dermatology and Laboratory of Skin Neurophysiology University Hospital, Brest, France

PDF

The innervation of the skin is very dense. There are synapses between nerve endings and many cells of the skin. All these cells are able to communicate because they express neurotransmitters and their receptors. Hence, the nervous system could influence each function of the skin, including immunity. In skin diseases, the equilibrium of these neurotransmitters is strongly disturbed. These data may help to understand the role of psyche in some somatic dermatoses. It is possible to imagine new treatments or new cosmetics which could act on abnormalities of the neuro-immuno-cutaneous system.
