Most psoriatic patients require topical therapy. Topical drugs may be the only treatment, but they can be also combined with oral drugs or phototherapy. In this paper we examine the efficacy and tolerability of the most recent topical drugs (vitamin D analogues and tazarotene) combined with phototherapy (UVB and UVA) compared with phototherapy alone for the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis. We review previous literature on this subject and conclude that, at the moment, there is sufficient evidence in support of the beneficial effects of combined treatment.
