Aim. In 30 patients with venous leg ulcers, the effect of a topical treatment based on catadinic microfine silver of high antibacterial power and a systemic treatment based on alimentary integrators (vitamins, minerals, proline, rutin and vegetable extracts), by measuring the quantity of oxygen diffusing through the perilesional skin (TOT) with Radiometer TCM 3.
Methods. All the patients enrolled in the study were submitted to measurement of transcutaneous oxygen at the in perilesional site at the time 0, after 14 days (time 1) and 28 days (time 2) from the beginning of the study. The patients were randomised into 3 groups to receive 3 different treatments: with histoffine medications, with alimentary integrators and histoffine medications, with alimentary integrators and topical treatment based on catadinic silver at the ulcer bed.
Results and conclusions. It was clear that, by means of perilesional TOT, the topical treatment based on catadinic silver and the treatment systemic applied improved the oxygen tension in the ulcer bed; this improvement was also detectable on objective examination.
